Historical Significance: The Chevalier family firm of opticians was founded in Paris in 1765 by Louis-Vincent Chevalier (1734-1804). His son, Vincent Jacques Louis Chevalier (1770-1841) and grandson, Charles Louis Chevalier (1804-1859) developed the first achromatic lens for microscopes in 1823. Charles' son Arthur Chevalier (1830-1872) also worked in the family firm. The business closed in 1889.
